Travel through time in Munich: antiques, vintage, second-hand and flea markets

Munich has more to offer than champagne, high heels and the English Garden. Munich also has antique, vintage, second-hand and, above all, flea markets. There are even rumors that Munich is the cheapest place to buy vintage! Read more about the best excursion destinations in Munich here.

1. Second-hand shops in Munich - from vintage to retro

von Alexa

Alexa's colorful store is full of retro fashion. She likes some of her pieces so much that she has a hard time parting with them. Alexa thinks Munich is the best city to buy vintage. Why? "Because Munich is a city of labels, but not known for vintage!”You might find a Bogner ski outfit in a 1970s Versace look every now and then on Alexa, but you have to look for labels there for a long time. For Alexa, vintage is more about “a unique piece, handmade, in a beautiful and creative fabric, tagless but from a small studio where clothes are made well and with love.”. In her shop you will mainly find things from the 1960s and 1980s.

Lugau antiquarian bookshop

"Some things don't fit in a drawer and sometimes the drawer is already full."A visit to the Antiquariat Lugauer is a true experience. For avid readers, bookworms, the curious, and the curmudgeon, this bookstore probably looks like heaven. After an obligatory two-minute introduction to the ins and outs of the store – crowded but very structured – it quickly becomes clear that… this store has EVERYTHING! From Dürrenmatt to Goethe, forbidden authors, novels for men (Western) or novels for women with a guaranteed happy ending, there are books from €1. You can also exchange the books you have read for new ones for a small fee.

#1 Sams&Son - Old bags

The Grand Budapest Hotelwon an Oscar for Best Achievement in Production Design, and we wouldn't be exaggerating to say that part of the credit goes to Sams&Son. That's why a visit to Sams&Son, the props supplier and attraction for nostalgia fans, is a true time travel experience and a must for every visit to Munich. At least for travel fans, travel enthusiasts and everyone who loves decoration and interior design. The shopkeeper in Munich's Glockenbachviertel is full of anecdotes and collects things from all over the world. Each piece seems to tell a story: suitcases, chests, gloves, cards, medicine balls, authentic industrial lamps and so on. His collection of old Louis Vuitton suitcases, which explored the world with the likes of Churchill and Bismarck, is particularly fascinating. Immerse yourself in the world of Sams&Son.

Located in the heart of Munich's modern university district, it has become a landmark of the district. Every day friends and locals come to bring him new and old stuff. As you can imagine, sometimes even the smart and kind Mr. Weiss doesn't quite know anymore what's in the back corners of his shop. But everyone is welcome to poke around and rearrange things. 🙂

#3 Antiquariat Rainer Köbelin – from old maps and design

Mister. Köbelin is the expert for old maps. He opened his shop in 1967 and was always up for a conversation about living with antiques, the sinister internet and society's shift towards a throwaway society. But if you don't feel like talking, he'll be happy to let you browse in peace. Girls in search of decoration come here and find men who fear that printed graphic design is a thing of the past. Köbelin's repertoire also includes postcards, old photos and the cute volumes from Inselverlag.

4. The best flea markets in Munich

#1 Gigantic flea market on the Theresienwiese

The huge flea market on the Theresienwiese is one of the city's must-see shows. On the third Sunday in April, the whole city parades across the Wiesnwiese and gets the first tan of the season and bargains! From 5 a.m. and even earlier, around 80,000 people are looking for the best deals. The chances of finding real treasures and good bargains are excellent at this flea market. There is EVERYTHING here, even dirndls and second-hand clothing from Munich residents. In order to secure the best sales spot, traders camp out on the meadows throughout Germany up to two weeks before the flea market day. Even Munich students camp the night before to secure the last spots. Important: bring time and money with you. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it - or something else!
