Suez: an exceptional canal

Two hours from Cairo (139 km) is Suez, the city with the famous Suez Canal and starting point for discovering the most interesting places in the region. The construction of the canal represented a major advance in maritime trade when it opened in 1869, allowing ships to take a 169-kilometer shortcut and avoid having to circumnavigate southern Africa. It was not an easy task, requiring ten years of work and 25,000 workers.
